The Teamsters are warming up the trucks and are ready to roll across Indiana. We take off bright and early tomorrow on the first of our two-day trek across the Hoosier state.
General President Jim Hoffa will lead the caravan of Teamster trucks. He’ll be stopping at a number of Teamster work sites to meet with rank-and-file members and talk to them about why they should support Barack Obama in the May 6 Democratic Primary.
And we’ll be blogging the trek across the Hoosier state mile by mile, just like we did during the Pennsylvania convoy a few weeks ago.
If you live in Gary, Fort Wayne or Indianapolis, you’re welcome to join us. In addition to the work site visits and the occaisional press stop, we'll also be pulling over for two rallies.
- 9 a.m. Thursday at Teamsters Local Union 142 in Gary.
- 12:30 p.m. Friday at Teamsters Local 135 in Indianapolis
We'll also be stopping at a UPS Freight terminal in Indianapolis. This location has a special place in Teamster history. It was the first UPS Freight facility we organized. Since that victory about a year ago, we've organized more than 10,000 UPS Freight workers.
Before being purchased by UPS, the company was known as Overnite Transportation, a horribly anti-union company that fought the Teamsters for more than 50 years.
In 2006, we won a neutrality agreement with UPS and began a card-signing drive. The results speak for themselves, and how efficient the card-check system can be.
When Mr. Hoffa was at a Reading, PA, UPS facility a few weeks ago, a UPS Freight worker walked over from the yard down the street to shake his hand and say thank you for not giving up on Overnite. That week was the first time the driver received his overtime pay, thanks to his new Teamster contract.
